Justin Sims is the Assistant Program Director of the Bruin Underground Scholars Program at UCLA. He is dedicated to supporting students with prior incarceration histories, helping them navigate their academic paths, and empowering them to succeed in higher education. In this role, Justin combines his unique professional experience and personal passion to create a supportive and inclusive student environment.
Before joining UCLA, Justin worked as a Community Health Worker and Workforce Navigator within the RISE program at St. John's Community Health. This experience was instrumental in developing the skills he now brings to his role at UCLA. During his time at St. John's, Justin honed his ability to connect with individuals facing significant life challenges, offering guidance and helping them access resources that foster long-term success.
Justin earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, with a minor in Business Administration, from Rockford University in Rockford, IL. His academic background, combined with his professional and personal experiences, has equipped him with the tools to advocate for individuals, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
Justin's journey from formerly incarcerated to a leader in higher education is a testament to his resilience and commitment to making a difference. His personal experiences have shaped his vision for creating equitable opportunities for all individuals seeking positive life changes, not just those in his program.
In his free time, Justin enjoys watching sports, hosting events, bowling, and watching movies—activities that allow him to unwind and connect with others. His professional and personal journey demonstrates his dedication to improving lives and fostering community growth.
